Following an intercept in the first quarter of Saturday’s 34-30 loss to Wake Forest in Raleigh, North Carolina, NC State quarterback Grayson McCall was taken off the field after suffering a hit to the head.
McCall was taken to a local hospital, but NC State eventually released him saying the quarterback “is alert and in good spirits.” The team said that every scan was normal.
Having missed the prior two Wolfpack games because to a concussion, McCall was starting his first game.
Coach Dave Doeren claimed McCall was cleared to play after passing all concussion procedures in advance of the Wake game.
“He was ready to play, and he took a really vicious hit,” Doeren remarked. “I hate it for him; sometimes football is a pretty violent sport and it was a major impact he took. You simply detest seeing a man hit like way. Clearly, the outcomes of such impacts are frightening.
McCall has a history of injuries, including a major head injury last season while playing at Coastal Carolina that nearly terminated his career.
Doeren remarked, “All the reports back from the hospital are positive.” “Once they’re done running through all the tests, clearly we’ll have more information at that time.”
McCall threw a pick with barely more than five minutes off the clock, and a pair of Wake defenders knocked his helmet off and sent the quarterback to the ground.
After McCall was struck, NC State players signaled right away for medical staff. As Wolfpack players came off the field in tears, athletic trainers pulled out a stretcher, ripped off McCall’s jersey, and fitted him with a neck brace.
Long delay notwithstanding, McCall was hauled off the field. He raised two fingers to the audience, but he generally kept his eyes closed while medical personal led him down the tunnel.
There were no flags thrown on the drama.
Starting each of the past two games against Clemson and Northern Illinois, freshman CJ Bailey came on in relief of McCall. Bailey completed 28-for- 42 passing for 272 yards, two touchdowns, one interception.
